Kwara First Lady Renews And Expands Health Insurance For Sickle Cell Warriors

In honor of the September 2023 Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the First Lady of Kwara State and Founder of the Ajike People Support Center, Ambassador Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, has taken initiative to procure health insurance coverage for over 150 individuals living with sickle cell disease. Additionally, the health insurance coverage for survivors who have been benefiting from the scheme since last year has been renewed, with an additional 50 individuals being added to the program.

During the presentation of the health insurance coverage to beneficiaries, which was facilitated by Dr. Olubunmi Jetawo-Winter, the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Health Insurance Agency, Ambassador Abdulrazaq emphasized that Nigeria carries the highest burden of sickle cell disease in the world. She reiterated the need for the Nigeria Governors Wives Forum to prioritize sickle cell awareness and advocacy as a national program for the forum.

Prof. AbdulRazaq further highlighted the significant social and economic burden that the management of sickle cell disease poses for survivors and their families. By providing continued insurance coverage, Sickle Cell Warriors are able to receive essential care and management to alleviate their pain and suffering.

Dr. Olubunmi expressed gratitude for the ongoing moral and financial support from the First Lady, commending her commitment to the well-being of individuals affected by sickle cell disease. She assured Her Excellency that the agency, as well as the Sickle Cell Warriors and other stakeholders, have implemented a mechanism to facilitate access to the care and management provided through the health insurance coverage.

A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a cheque by Ambassador Prof Olufolake Abdulrazaq to the Executive Secretary, symbolizing the First Lady's dedication to extending support to individuals living with sickle cell disease and fostering their well-being.
