Gov Abdulrazaq's Judicial Appointments, Luxury SUV Gifts Spark Outrage
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's decision to appoint six new High Court judges and gift them luxury SUVs has ignited widespread fury, amidst allegations of judicial manipulation and reckless spending.
Governor AbdulRazaq's inauguration of the new judges on Friday has sparked intense criticism, with opponents accusing him of attempting to influence the judiciary ahead of the upcoming elections.
The newly appointed judges are:
1. Ibijoke Olabisi Olawoyin
2. Fatimah Funsho Abdulrasaq
3. Oluwatosin Adenike Adeniyi
4. Yusuf Diko Adebayo
5. Olalekan Osuolale Ajayi
6. Muritala Folohunsho
Critics argue that the appointments are a blatant attempt to pack the judiciary with loyalists, ensuring a favorable outcome in any potential election disputes.
"The timing and motives behind these appointments are highly suspicious," said PDP State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara. "We urge media agencies to investigate. Is it mere coincidence that the Governor has only now, since 2019, recognized the judiciary's need for attention? We fear this may be an attempt to rig the system in his favor, especially with local government elections looming. We know where disputes are often settled."
Adewara added, "While we would have applauded the gesture to these esteemed judges, we have reservations about the timing."
Civil rights activist Comrade Segun Awogbade condemned the luxury SUV gifts as extravagant and insensitive. "Many citizens struggle to make ends meet, yet the Governor prioritizes opulence. His priorities are skewed."
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor AbdulRazaq urged the new judges to discharge their duties with "diligence, impartiality, and an overriding interest in the community and national security." He expressed confidence that they would remain committed to the administration of justice for all.
Boasting about his judicial appointments, Governor AbdulRazaq said, "This also brings the total number of High Court Judges I have sworn in within five years in office to eleven (11)."
However, many remain skeptical, pointing to the Governor's history of controversy and perceived power consolidation.
