The Kwara State Police Command has urged students to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities as part of efforts to strengthen security in and around schools across the state.

The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, gave the charge in Ilorin during a Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Safe Schools intervention, where buses and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras were donated to selected schools.

Adekimi urged students to embrace the security principle, “If you see something, say something,” and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to teachers, school authorities, parents or security agencies.

He also cautioned students against social vices and other activities that could threaten their safety, education and future, stressing the importance of discipline and responsible conduct.

PCRC Safe Schools Programme

The intervention was organised under the PCRC Safe Schools Programme, which aims to improve security awareness and infrastructure in schools through collaboration among the police, communities and educational institutions.

Speaking at the event, the convener of the programme, Mallam Sulyman Yerima Sulu Gambari, a retired principal officer of the Department of State Services (DSS), commended the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.

Gambari urged the beneficiary schools to properly maintain the facilities and ensure that the donated equipment is used strictly for its intended purposes.

PCRC Calls for More Support

Representing the National President of the PCRC, Alhaji Uthman Jagunma, described the intervention as a positive contribution towards protecting children and improving the learning environment.

He called on individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at improving the safety and welfare of children across the country.

Beneficiary Schools

The beneficiary schools in Ilorin are:

  • United Community Primary and Secondary School
  • Sheikh Abdulsalam School
  • Model Primary School

The principals of the beneficiary schools expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the donated buses and CCTV cameras would complement existing security measures and help create safer environments for teaching and learning.

PCRC Plans 10,000-Volunteer Safe Schools Network

As part of its wider Safe Schools Programme, the PCRC has also announced plans to mobilise 10,000 volunteers and deploy CCTV cameras to vulnerable schools across Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening community participation in school security and improving early detection and reporting of threats around educational institutions.
