Flooding has destroyed houses and farmlands in Pututa and several other communities in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, following heavy rainfall and rising water levels.
The affected communities include Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko, with residents reportedly suffering damage to homes, farms and other properties.
According to a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected communities to sympathise with residents and assess the situation.
The governor confirmed that no lives were lost in the flooding but said significant property damage was recorded.
“No life was lost, but properties were destroyed,” AbdulRazaq said.
Kwara Governor Announces ₦10m Emergency Support
During the visit, AbdulRazaq announced a ₦10 million emergency support package for residents of Pututa.
The intervention is expected to provide affected residents with essential items, including food, drinking water and medicines.
The governor also directed the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to conduct an assessment of the extent of damage caused by the flooding.
Kwara Listed Among States in Federal Flood Alert
The flooding comes amid a Federal Government flood alert issued on September 28, warning residents in 24 states, including Kwara, of possible flooding between September 27 and October 10, 2026.
The warning was issued following forecasts of heavy rainfall, rising river levels, saturated soil and increased surface runoff across parts of the country.
The advisory, signed by the department’s Director, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, classified communities across the country into critical, high and moderate flood-risk categories for the period.
States with communities listed in the critical-risk category include Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo.
Government Seeks Long-Term Solution
The Kwara State Government said it would continue discussions with relevant Federal Government authorities on the proposed dredging of the River Niger, as part of efforts to address recurring flooding in communities along the river.
“The government will continue to engage with the Federal Government on the dredging of the River Niger to find a lasting solution to the flooding,” the state government said.
The latest flooding has renewed concerns over the impact of rising water levels on communities, farmland and livelihoods in parts of Kwara State, particularly those located around the River Niger basin.
